Boy, so many good ones but one I think of as a real native to your area and a great wildlife plant is partridgeberry (Mitchella repens). Grows in those areas naturally so it should be a winner for you. Look at our native ginger (Asarum canandense) and our native pachysandra (Pachysandra procumbens) as other good alternatives...
