What can a Newbie do to prep for 2010 garden? Northern IL

We had unusual cool and wet weather (from my understanding) and nothing really was as successful as I hoped.

What can I do to get my act together for my 2010 garden, now?

I'm reading and reading..Hoping I remember what I read..

I have an unfinsihed basement where I can get things going...but don't know what to do.

The only definitive thought I have right now - get a worm compost going.

Any other ideas for a newbie? (I'm actually dreaming of a veggie garden lately)

Right now, mainly planning, ordering seeds, starting compost.

Here's a picture of my basement seed starting operation:

Its a little too early to start most things now, but SOON! :)

Then once the ground thaws and dries out a bit, you can be preparing your soil-- turning, amending. But where I am, that isn't before mid-March, for you probably later than that.
