I have a large clump of giant chives and want to split them up to put in other parts of the garden.

I am not sure whether to dig up part of the clump and separate it into sections and plant those out, or whether to collect the seed and start from scratch. Any ideas?

Chives actually divide quite easily, and in fact, benefit from being divided and cleaned out. All of the old stem bottoms can be removed when you break the plant up, and it makes a tidier plant, and gives the plant more room to grow.
You don't need to be particularly gently with them, just divide them as you would an iris - cut your large plant into however many plants you want, tidy them up, - you may want to trim their tops back, and then replant them, and water well.

Hi Marge, all I do is cut the plant in half or in some other fraction using a shovel. Easy as pie.

If the rains keeps off tomorrow I shall give it a go.
