leylandii

I have a row of leylandii trees in my garden that stood about five feet tall. I needed some work done in the garden which included trimming these trees a bit. However, my father in law who cut them back may have cut too much. Some of them hardly have any branches left at the front but the trees do have branches at the sides which still form a hedge. I know these trees are supposed to grow like wildfire but if they are lacking in branches then what are my chances of them looking bushy again?

Thanks for any advice on this matter.

I'd push them with fertilizer and plenty of water (organic fertilizer will be longer term). Need to do it soon to give the new foliage time to harden off before winter...
