Mozzarella type fungus on dead tree trunk

Found a table tennis ball sized white blob on a dead tree trunk in my garden this morning which wasn't there yesterday (the blob not the tree). Scraped it off and it was of a gooey consistency not unlike mozzarella. Can anyone tell me what this might be. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture before I scraped it off and it's now in my bin in a carrier bag with the dead headless pigeon I found outside my front door this morning! (anyone know anything about voodoo?)
