Blue lichen?

I was raking leaves today and came across this old branch, turned it over and at first thought there was blue candlewax on it. Then I realized it was lichen! BLUE lichen.

So here's a photo, and I'm going to see if I can identify this all too cool phenomenon in my backyard!

Wow! That really is BLUE! I've never seen anything quite that bright of blue before. It sure does look like candle wax doesn't it? Let us know what you find out! 8)

So far:

There are a lot of fiction writers and websites named "blue lichen."

Blue lichen is frequently used in dreamy descriptions of the forest.

But ... I have yet to find an informative site about it!

I've been looking a bit too - same thing. Never knew there were so many lichens out there either!

I know the bright yellow one that seems prevalent on the west coast, but seems to have moved here too (probably with nursery stock) but have never seen the blue...Way cool! 8)
