CLAY HEAVY SOIL

I have about 1000 sq ft of vegetable garden space. About 1/2 of it is really heavy with clay. This half produces a really poor yield. How do I get rid of this and make it into a garden I can be proud of?

I'm very familiar with it; that's what we have here in Ohio also. The general answer is add lots and lots of organic material to it... compost, manure, leaves etc. The quick answer is build a raised bed on top of it at least 12" deep. Fill your raised bed with good enriched topsoil and plant into it. Then it doesn't matter what the underlying soil is. I have some raised beds (16" deep) built on top of my concrete patio. Even tomatoes do fine in it.
