What to do with two patches on either side of Driveway?

Hi.I have 2 patches of lawn to dig up out the front of a newer style brick house,one on each side being 5mx3m2 and the other 6mx2m2.I was wondering if a couple of plants and to pebble stone this size area out the front section both sides of the driveway would look good and suit it and what type of plants would look good or other advice you might have.It was originaly ready lawn but died. some helpful advice would be highly appreciated.Thanks.

What is the USDA hardiness zone for that area? Or, another way of putting it, what is the average yearly lowest temp. for that area?

OP is in Auckland, New Zealand; I'm not sure what the USDA equivalent would be.
