Please help identify my large unidentifiable plant!

A year after we bought our property - a lovely large flax type plant (about 800mm high) grew quietly in the corner where there isn't a huge amount of direct sunlight - especially in the winter, at one point I even considered putting it in a large pot for the deck however then it grew this flame red stem which is now about 2 metres tall (6 months later) and has faded to pale pink, about September it flowered (NZ's spring) which have now all died off. From recollection these flowers were red/pink in colour also.
A friend suggested it could be part of the aloe family and I have searched websites looking at the various types but just can't place it!
Another friend also noted (about our other plants) how interesting it was that we had a few south american plants in our garden - so I didn't know if it was something more exotic for this part of the world.

If you have any ideas on what it can be please - I welcome any suggestions as I am new to the whole gardening hobby and I am completely stumped. :?

My guess is agave, but I've not seen one with mottled leaves like that. Yucca leaves are more strap-like.
