Introduction

I wasn't sure where to put this, so I popped it here.

I'm Jamie, married to Matt who is a chef, and mom of 4, 9 year old girl, and three boys, 4, 2 and 1. I am a homeschooler and a girl scout leader and much of a "granola" head as my mother tells me. I'm a homebirth and breastfeeding advocate.

I got my "roots" in gardening as a child when my german grandparents would have me spend summers with them in Maryland. My Opa had a huge vegetable garden, and they'd always give me a small plot. My Oma still grows her own herbs, though she's up there in years and can't garden much anymore. (In fact, I do her flowers every year).

As a teen, for a mothers day present every year, I'd plant a flower garden in our front yard for my mother.

I've always loved getting in the dirt. It's one of the most calmest activities that I can think of.

Three years ago I decided to try my hand at vegetable gardening. We lived in Western NY at the time, and I had three small raised beds. For a first year I don't think I did too bad, and it was most definately a learning year for me. Except for the corn.

Then we moved to Virginia. The first year back I did a large garden area. It went quite well, with exception to my corn... Again, learning every year.

Last year I got a late start due to having a baby in mid-April. But still, not a bad year (wich exception of corn yet again, )

Anyhow, this year I'm really excited. I've made some changes to our soil (clay). I also am not pregnant nor do I have an infant to hamper my endeavor!

So I just wanted to stop by, say hello and glad that I found the forum.

Wow Jamie, that is a great introduction! Nice to have you here. As Roger said, we're a pretty friendly bunch. I definately recommend getting your children to get their hands into the soil. There is nothing better for kids than kindling a love for the earth.

My brother and I were blessed enough to grow up on a farm and it was a great place to live and learn about everything. At age 5 my brother was entering his produce into local farm fairs and winning prizes. I was the late bloomer for gardening but, it was my childhood that has inspired my love for plants and for that matter Biology (my career).

My 4 year old step cousin loves to walk around my organic garden and eat just about everything (it's nearly all edible), watch all the insects and birds doing their thing and play in the dirt. And my 15 year old step cousin is even torn away from her computer now and then to come and talk with me when I'm in the garden.

Welcome to the forum Jamie! We are a very friendly bunch here, and I think you will enjoy the casual atmosphere.
I have been an avid gardner for about twenty five years (since I could have my own garden spot), and before that, was the gardener in our family. I got my gardening bug from being alongside my grandfather while tending his roses. That is now my true gardening love, roses, and continue with several of his bushes, and many of the tricks he taught me.

I also garden just about everything else as well, and all organically. My partner in life only likes to garden things that he can eat, vegetables and fruit trees, or move big boulders around, I get the rest!

Not to worry about the still learning part - we are all still learning, every single day! Great to have you!

Thanks for the wonderful welcome!

I absolutely have my kids help me. They love it. Last year, my 4 year old would ask me daily, are my carrots ready? Mommy, when can I eat my carrots? LOL! My daughter had a thing with her sunflowers too. They are good kids who definately like to help. I'm gettig them started early! When I go out to check on the progress, they are usually walking along with me saying, ohhh, mom I see a cucumber! Look, squash! hee hee.

I'm sure you will be hearing quite a bit from me in the future.

That's great that your kids are so into gardening. They will definately benefit from all the time spent in the garden.

I remember watching a program years ago about a school somewhere in the U.S. where the school had a vegetable garden that the kids worked in as part of their curriculum. Half of the class would work in the garden and the other half would use the produce to make lunch for the school. It was a really novel idea.
