Some nice fertilizers are sold at https://dallasbonsai.com.
There are the spring and summer fertilizers and there are the fall and winter fertilizers. They are expensive though, and depending on where you live, shipping could cost half the total cost of both sets put together. Maybe even more. As my thumb has almost lost it's greeness(actually it's a yellowish color :D )I'd wait for more advice. I am currently not using fertilizer because I do not have anything t fertilize. Although I have some seedling Japanese Maples.
Good Luck

rondo769,

In the past I have used a balanced (10-10-10 or 20-20-20) fertilizer about every week early on and later about every 10 days during the growing season. I mix it according to the directions and have never had a problem. My mix is relatively free draining though and this fertilizer is flushed out pretty quickly. Some growers do mix at half strength but apply more often.

There are also other choices, organic fertilizers either solid or liquid can be used as well. This year I am experimenting a little more and using less synthetics but if used properly they are safe and effective.
