Hey all... I just found this site and figured I'd give it a try.. hopefully some sound body will read this and offer assistance....

I got a bonsai tree as a friendship gift from a friend a few months ago...5 to be exact. It was very pretty. I went online to see how to maintain it. Some site said water it every 3 days, keep in sunlight. I did this.

Now I live in NY. It was cold at first and then hot as heck. I kep the tree, in the glass pot it came in, on top of the fridge by the window so it could get light from outside. Well it started turning yellow (like the trees in the fall). I went online again and looked up another site. Water every day and change the pot because it might be too small for the roots.... I did this (watered it every 3 days though - didnt want to over water it.. well it is now completely yellow. WHAT DO I DO?

my friend is going to kill me. she said if it dies that our friendship.. oh boy.. I cant even buy another one and replace it because this one has a branch that hangs to one side and she'll know the difference..

help......

dying bonsai in the bronx... lol

Don't water by the calendar, water by the plant...

Check the soil and see if the roots are still sound. Backk off the water if the roots are black and mushy; if not then it's the amount of light it's getting, and you might need to supplement with a grow light...

Here's a bunch of articles that'll give you most of the basics; let us know how you do and if we need to go to step 2... :D

thats exactly what I am going through - of course minus the 200 years old since I have no idea how old it is - I have a black thumb - plants never live with me no matter how much I try to follow instructions....

right now my bonsai is yellow - litterally. I swear it's dead. I changed the soil, I put it in a bigger bowl, moved it away from the direct hit of the sun, and it doesnt look like it is trying to recuperate... if I brush the branches - they break immediatly. The trunk - is that whats its called - is started to turn brown now too - not vibrant green like it once was.

whats a girl to do. Is there plant food or something I am missing?

Dee, you said bowl....please tell me you mean a pot with good drainage...

Bearlady, 200 year old trees are worth thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars and even more importantly, they are heirlooms. Did you recieve the tree dead? If not the person who gifted you may be VERY upset  . It sounds gone, but get it to a pro ASAP to determine if there is anything to be done...
