Grape Vine Bonsai advice for newbie please!

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here on the forum. I'm very much an amateur about bonsai, so please excuse my lack of knowledge as I'm here to learn.

I received a grape vine bonsai last autumn. In January or February (whenever all the leaves had dropped) I trimmed back the longest vine to about the 4th or 5th node. Maybe this wasn't far down enough? Well, new leaves have started coming in, and before I knew it, a new vine had grown to about 3 ft long! This vine is growing right where I cut it back.

I've been searching online & have seen contradicting advice for whether to cut back this long vine or not. That's my main concern at the moment, as I'd like to do the right thing to encourage it to fruit. Besides the vine, there are also nice new leaves growing near the trunk. I'll confess I haven't even fed it yet and it's bursting with life.

I would appreciate any advice you experts could give me! Also, do I just pinch the incoming leaves near the trunk as necessary to maintain a nice shape?

I hope this hasn't already been covered already. I did read this thread https://www.helpfulgardener.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=655 and didn't find the answer.

Thanks in advance! :D

firebird,

Hello and welcome. Sorry I have never tried to grow Grapes as bonsai and only have very minimal experience with them in general. There is a little information here but it is rather sparse.

Can anyone else help out on this one?

Norm
