help a friend wants me to help save this tree

I know nothing about Bonsai and was asked to help since I do grow a lot of things. Can you help identify the tree and the problem? She has had it 4 years and it was healthy untill moving into an aparment.

That's an umbrella tree (Schefflera spp). It's an easy tree but seems to be getting a bit large for that container; I'd suggest repotting. Look for the step-by-step instructions on the bonsai page on this site...
