Chinese elm may be dead or dying - please help

Hi all,

I have a chinese else bonsai that I've had for the last 5 years. It's around 22 years old now and I'm scared it's dying or dead. The entire upper part where any and all leaves were is looking dry and dead. The lower trunk is still alive...is there any way I can save it?

I have it outside by a big tree, mostly in the shade. I give it a little water every day. It has lived there for almost the entire time I've had it. I have cut back all the branches as far as I dare to (for now). I suppose what I need to know is if I cut it back to the living part, will it return?

I'm just sick over this...it's my baby... :(
