Japanese Maple questions

Hello fellow enthusiasts.
I don't know much about bonsai but I do think this bloke needs a growth pot or whatever there named. He needs to thicken that trunk. Can someone recommend some sizes that are appropriate?
I live in Western Sydney, the roots haven't been trimmed, nor foliage. Friendly constructive advice appreciated.
Cheers all.

Bonsai-Novice,

I do this kind of work in the spring which means that you have time to look into soil mixes and find a pot. It will, of course, take more than a few years to get anywhere, especially in pots. You might consider planting this out in the garden to help it get going. Fall is a good time to do this.

By fall do you mean autumn? It gets very hot here. Around 40 degrees Celsius in summer

Bonsai-Novice,

Yes, by fall I mean autumn. The ground is still warm while the air is cooling, a good time to set out potted trees. I wondered about your climate, A, palmatum can be stressed by hot weather.
