When to trunk chop?

I have a Sweetgum and an English Elm I want to trunk chop, when is the best time to do this? because it is very drastic, so I don't want to kill my trees!

sean117Ply,

I don't have any experience with Sweetgum but I always chop Elms in the spring before bud burst. Unless I am terribly mistaken that puts you at exactly the wrong time of year to do a chop. It's fall for you now, correct? I would wait approx. 6 months. I just chopped a Zelkova yesterday, probably a bit early for some species but I have an unheated garage for shelter and have had good luck chopping Zelkova this early before.

sean117Ply,

Be sure to post the chop when you do it.

Gnome,

You have made me curious with this new Zelkova chop. I'm going to be chopping one in the spring just after I repot. Yes chop and repot at the same time. I need to fix the root problem and figured why not go all out, I'm sure it can handle it.

Tom,
You have made me curious with this new Zelkova chop.
It is just a little thing that had no future as it was. I'll post a few pictures in the gallery later today so as not to hijack this thread.
