Help! My bonsai is in trouble!!

Hi. My husband bought me a bonsai tree in May of this year. It has been doing well up until recently. Now, a good portion of the tree is dry and a light green, not a dark green like normal. Also parts of the dry part are brown. Also, the roots I believe are showing. Would I need to plant it into a new pot? It spends all of its time inside by a window. Should I plant it outside? Since I live in a desert climate, would it be best to plant it in direct sunlight (where during summer temps are 105 or higer) or some where close to another tree so the huger tree can shade it some of the time. I need serious help. Please help.

there are only a few that can be kept indoor in the proper conditions

there are quite a few different species.. and they almost all have different care instructions.

there is a link to a species guide. you can look through them to determine what kind you have.. and post pics as soon as you can.
