Definition of Martial:
soldierly: (of persons) befitting a warrior; "a military bearing"
warlike: suggesting war or military life
martial(a): of or relating to the armed forces; "martial law"
Creating Bonsai has no relation to war or military life. So it can't be classified as a martial art.

You may want to read up on a little history of Bonsai in the main articles section of our website.

I refuse to work hard enough to make sense of this post...

Due to a complete absence of punctuation above I have to guess where the fist sentence ends..... This unfounded assertion is one possible ending point.
It is not apparent to me that this has been on the minds of 'thousands of enthusiasts' Proof please.
martial art / living artform
This makes no sense to me in any way I can determine.

Bonsai is most certainly not a martial art.

Is it possible you refer to hearing someone say 'Banzai'? Which does have a connotation relating to war, Among others.

They are commonly confused:

Banzai: Pronounced 'Bon-Sigh'

As opposed to Bonsai, Which is properly pronounced Bone-Sigh.

I've been a martial artist for many years, and I can clearly tell you, Bonsai is not a martial art.

However, the practice of bonsai might be helpful in clearing one's mind, taking time to do something artful and restful, as opposed to constantly working in the fighting arts. Balance is a must to the true martial artist, IMHO.
