I am growing a Japanese Red Pine (Pinus densiflora) from a seed and it just sprouted. The thing is that the sprout is now pointing down.

Is it supposed to point down, or should I try to straighten it out by supporting it with dirt? Or what?
Echo, Welcome to the forum.
I don't do seeds personally but I wouldn't fool with it [Seems like a bad idea you know], Just let it grow and it should straighten up towards the light.

Echo554,

I was hoping the picture would show the seed coat still attached but I see now that it does not but you should note the texture (what you can see of it) of the soil.
Can I ask why you are only growing one? When I start seeds I always start as many as I can knowing that many will fail for various reasons. If you have more I would suggest that you sow them soon and use a better mix what you have now is way too dense and wet for Pines. It may even succumb to a fungal attack being so wet. Let it dry considerably.

Welcome to the forum.
That is perfectly natural don't disturb it now. It probably should have been a bit deeper. The root points down and as the seed head straightens itself out this helps the seed shed the seed coat. But even in nature it does not always work. Here are some Scots pine I started last year.I am growing a Japanese Red Pine (Pinus densiflora) from a seed and it just sprouted. Alright, thank you.
I am actually trying to germinate Chinese Elm, White Pine and Japanese Red Pine but I really don't know what I'm doing. I've read so many different ways to go about growing Bonsai I'm not even sure which procedure to follow. If you could give me some tips I would really appreciate it. But this is the only one that sprouted. I thought you were supposed to use Peat to grow it? I used a mixture of peat and garden soil.
...I also have another problem. I put the plant out in the sun today and left it out for a couple hours, and it is now losing colour. Turning brighter/whiter (not as dark). It may be too late but I don't think so. Any suggestions on what to do to get it back to normal?
...thanks alot for helping.

And once they are germinated.

My advice for the novice attempting to grow bonsai from seed is don't, at least not exclusively. If you really want to try good for you, but it is quite a journey. Growing from seed is about the longest route to a 'finished' bonsai there is. It is very challenging but does offer some distinct advantages.I am actually trying to germinate Chinese Elm, White Pine and Japanese Red Pine but I really don't know what I'm doing. You may still get more. But this is the only one that sprouted.
I use my same bonsai mix that has been sifted to a smaller particle size. You could have included some Perlite.I thought you were supposed to use Peat to grow it? I used a mixture of peat and garden soil.
I doubt that a few hours of sunlight has damaged your seedling, just wait and see. Hopefully some more will germinate for you....I also have another problem. You are welcome, and good luck....thanks alot for helping.
