Bonsai for College

I am just starting out in college and would like to try and grow a bonsai in my dorm room, but I don't know what kind would be suitable. I am in Virginia and the tree would be kept on the windowsill year round. The window gets a few hours of direct morning sun as it faces more or less east north east. Also, apparently the heat in our dorms is cranked high during the winter so the window would most likely be left open, even when it is cold. Any suggestions for a beginner??

Wow! tough conditions -- not a lot of light, hot dry room air but exposure to cold night air. I might try a schefflera.
