Well after looking at ynot's link to online bonsai retails, I am tempted to buy a pack of seeds, as dallas bonsai is offering two packs for under $5. I am just wondering has anyone grown any bonsai from seeds, and if so, how did it work out? Just trying to do some research before I go out and buy anything.

I don't do seeds myself, And I doubt anyone here is old enough to have grown a bonsai from seed... lol.JoeLewko wrote: I am just wondering has anyone grown any bonsai from seeds, and if so, how did it work out? Just trying to do some research before I go out and buy anything.

If your game, Here& here is a bit about how to get them started.
Try googling seed propagation or something similar for tons more info.

thanks, the site said propagation instructions come with the packet, but I'm not sure how extensive they are. Just inquiring, not sure if I'll do this (I doubt I have the patience , I'd rather just go some already grown stock), but it could be cool to grow pines or something, it would be nice to eventually have a bonsai grown from a seed.
Hmm, Pines would probably be the most difficult route to take IMO, You would have plenty of time to learn about them though.JoeLewko wrote:... but it could be cool to grow pines or something, it would be nice to eventually have a bonsai grown from a seed.
Read these two articles for a bit about training Black Pines in particular:

Joe,
Avoid Japanese Maple seeds that have been dried, and since you never know I think I would just forgo Maples unless you can collect your own as I do. Pines, as Ynot has noted will take many years to get anywhere with, around a decade for even a small bonsai and it takes some specific techniques to get there.
Zelkovas are vigorous growers and I got pretty good germination from my attempt. Malus are strong growers as well but it will take quite a while until they flower from seed.
