Need help identifying a Bonsai

Can someone help me identify this bonsai? It has light green foliage that grows on top of the darker green. Is this because it is younger and will eventually get darker? Just curious..
Thanks!

omar,

Thanks for fixing the link :)

About the foliage, Yes the new growth is just brighter is all :).

I am not sure about the species, It is a bit difficult to tell by the photos, Can you get a close up of the foliage?

At the moment I am leaning towards Podocarpus macrophyllus.

Take a look hereand see if the foliage and bark look similar to yours.

How long have you had it? - Any possibility of getting more info from the vendor?

Here's a link about taking helpful pictures: https://www.helpfulgardener.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3557

Let me know if you feel it is close and I can get you some good info on how to take care of it.

dear ynot
thanks for the quick reply!
I think you're right about Podocarpus macrophyllus.
The foliage is highly similar. Mine may be slightly curvier than what I found in some photos on the web. The bark is similar too.
I've had this plant for a week and have been keeping it by a cool window with a lot of indirect light. The vendor could not help me identify it, and its tag simply said Bonsai. I could of course go back when a more experienced vendor is there, but I hate to take it back and forth if I already know what it is.
I greatly appreciate any information you may be able to provide about caring for this baby tree.
Thank you,
Omar Jacob

Omar,

Your welcome,

Here is a bit of info on them: https://www.bonsai4me.com/SpeciesGuide/Podocarpus.html
Take note of the lighting requirements- Your tree needs good light.
Indoors is a notoriously dark place as far as plants go.

On the following link there are numerous articles about bonsai care.

https://www.bonsai4me.com/Basics.html

I would pay special attention to the beginners ones and also take special note of the ones referring to 'bonsai soil' and 'watering' {Soil especially as Podocarpus require a very well draining soil.}

All will be helpful though...Take the time to check them out [Repeatedly as there is much info to absorb. :)]

If you have more questions, Just ask. :)

I'm quite sure I would never buy a plant from someone that doesn't know what he's selling.

Doesn't sound very professional in my opinion. If he doesn't know what it is, how on earth can he tell you how to care for it.

dear rjj,

thanks for your feedback. I went back to the store and confirmed the species and care requirements for my plant. the day I bought it there was an apprentice there and she was not quite sure what it was, as there was no specific name on the label, but I liked the plant and so decided to buy it anyway.

thanks again to ynot for his helpful comments.

O. Jacob
