Gensing Ficus

I purchased a gensing ficus a while ago.I have exposed most of the root and repotted it in a container to let it grow out in.It had the trunk removed before I got it.Now all that are let are 10 sucker trunks. It has tons of leaves on them and otherwise is alive.I am not sure what to do with it.should I pick out the best trunk and cut the rest off or let them all grow. What is the proper technique?I'd like to cut it all off including the stump from the original trunk it was about 3/4 of an inch around and it looks terrible with the stump.

Sailfins,

What are you aiming for? This will determine your choice of techniques.

It is extremely difficult to offer options sight unseen, Pictures would help tremendously. :) As well as some more details about it. IE: How long since it was repotted, Size, Design goals etc... {See the link} [url=https://www.helpfulgardener.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3557]Here are some tips on taking photos that will be effective in helping us to help you.[/url]

Onsite, Try using the search feature:

Petra has a few threads regarding hers, Try her name or 'ginseng ficus' which will bring up every single time it is mentioned on site [Provided it is spelled right ...]

Off site, I would take a look at the 2450 pictures of ginseng ficus on goolge image search.

Please do read the sticky wrt taking pictures, It will help us to help you. :)

Ok,
Yep, lol but Thanks still.

I have several immediate questions:

Does that pot have a drainage hole in it?

Overall size? {From soil to apex [Top of tree]}

You mentioned that you just repotted it, Was there a reason for that? When was it? & What potting medium is it in? Was there a healthy mass of feeder roots when you repotted?
I ask because these usually do not have an excessive feeder root system.

What is your intended style and size for this tree? Something specific? Or just what's possible?

Where does this tree live? It would benefit from as much light as is possible.

sorry about the pictures but its the best I could at the time.
The pot has no holes in it.It has 3'' of gravel then just potting soil.I repotted it because it came in a broken plastic container. It't all I had at the
time.I didn't know any better then.
from dirt to apex is 12"It has quite a few roots.I left them alone
I honestly don't know what is even possible. It looks pathetic as it is.

1. It needs a drainage hole. [or rather a container with one at the minimum]

2. Potting soil is absolutely not doing it any favors. See the links below.

Between the potting soil and no drainage you have a recipe for root rot from it being far far too wet. Both of these things need to change and soon.
[If only I knew how long it had been this way. :P ....See below.]

Do you mean the white hair like feeder roots or the thick storage roots?

Again:
When was it repotted?
Again: Where does this tree live? It would benefit from as much light as is possible.

To improve this trees health [required before you can improve it's design.]

You need:[ A pot with drainage is required.]
1. Proper bonsai soil.
2. More light.
3. Time

Please read these two threads about soil: https://www.helpfulgardener.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3422

Here are a few bonsai basics: https://www.bonsai4me.com/Basics.html

I suggest you focus on the articles about watering, Soil, Indoor, and the beginners basics. Take your time and absorb it.

There is plenty there to digest though the entire page will be relevant eventually.

Some more information on ficus can be found here: https://www.bonsaihunk.us/ficusforum/FicusForum.html Jerry literally wrote the book on ficus.

You will find a lot of info that will be very useful to you in the previous links, Please check them out.
