did your Chinese elm come out of dormancy yet?

Not sure if mine will ever wake up. I kept it in a dark outdoor shed for 2 months from Janurary to March with his cousin the Seiju elm. The Seiju came out of dormancy about 3 weeks ago and is filled with full size leafs now. I even changed out the soil for the Seiju 2 weeks ago and he's really happy. Did any one's regular elm come out of dormancy near the north east yet?

leafless Chinese elm.

This is what the Seiju elm looks today full of leafs.

No elms here, but some maples, gingko, etc., have not broken bud yet. Is it even budding?

Mine grows like a weed all year but since I just planted it in the ground, it's slowed down but will probably pick up soon.

since there's been no reply from someone near the NY/NJ/PA tri state area I thought I'd post a few pictures in hopes to get some assessments. Is there hope for this tree? We're looking at a week of temperatures in the 60s and 70s coming up and it's still not budding =(

Scratch the trunk low. No green, probably dead.

so we just got some 90 deg F weather here today. The buds don't pop I don't know what will, seems like he's either dead or in a coma.

Just keep it moist, and give it more time

Agreed, I've seen plenty of late sleepers in my time.

linlaoboo,

I live here in Northern VA and I was experiencing the same thing with my Chinese Elm. There were little dark brown buds all over the place on the tree, but none seemed to be 'popping'. I repotted the tree about 6 weeks ago (now I know it was the wrong time) and have thought it to be dead. However, I just looked and there are 2 small leaves opening up and some other buds starting to swell.

I say give it some more time...it has been a weird Spring this year and I think that may have something to do with it.

Well Northern VA is at least a little warmer than NJ so hopefully mine will wake up soon cuz he is really under developed and I plan to plant it in my grow bed. Thanks guys for some hope still.

bertoman,

I'm happy to report as of this morning 1 or 2 buds are trying to pushing out. So next year if I run into the problem again I'll have to check with you lol.

So it is now 4/23 and I live in zone 7. My chinese elm doesn't appear to be budding at all. I've scratched the bark high up on the tree and it's still green. Anyone else in zone 7 still have a dormant chinese elm? I'm really starting to wonder if the past winter killed the tree.

Last year it budded out on 4/17 so it was pretty late...I may be well into May before I start seeing growth. Is that normal for C. Elms?

Bertoman,

You and I got the late sleepers last year. Mine started popping last year on 4/20 but this year nothing yet but I have moved into a new home and I planted it in the yard last Sept. This year the top half of the tree has gone crisp and snap off easily with my fingers so it's a junk shoot at this point if the bottom will ever wake up. If I get any luck I'll report it here. Good luck with yours!
