What kind of mulch should I use?

I have heard that some kinds of mulch can be harmfull for trees; they can add acids and minerals to the soil. Is it okay to cover the soil with leaves for root protection instead of mulch?

I've mostly used leaves for my hearty trees, the past fifteen years, lets hope its ok, eh? ;)
