thick bark and grafting

Hi,

can anyone explain methods of grafting roots(other than thread grafting as there isnt enough room), but specificaly on trees with very thick bark?

I have an english elm, and I would have to grow some cuttings from it for this perpose.

But what bothers me is that the bark is incredibly thick on the roots compared to the actaul wood and I cant see how the smaller peice wouldnt just get lost in it.

thanks for any info

Just shave the bark down to the cambium layers on both the cutting and the tree and do an approach graft. If you think that the bark will eventually overtake the new root then you can just let the cutting grow out until it is thicker.

Thanks alot,

I recon it will take some thickening but I'll give it a try.
I'm thinking mabe root cuttings considering ulmus' tendancy for suckering.

should b an intriqguing project.

Thanks again
