Dark area on branch cutting

Hi everyone,

As you can see in the photo a dark area revealed itself when I cut a branch of my Acerola. There was some dark mold on the bark at a few places on the tree (which I washed off) which lead me to believe it's some fungus.

I drilled a bit down into the wood and the dark area got noticably smaller than in the photo but is still present. I'm a bit hesitant to go any further though, so I want to ask you guys what's the best thing to do?

I'm fairly new to this but it has so far been my experience to dig that out.
Now before you go grabing a saw make sure others here agree to my suggestion.
I had something similar on one of my ficus plants and used a jin tool to dig out all the damaged and "infected" wood. Then I put a sealant over the scar to prevent it from coming back. Thats just my two cents. But wait till someone with greater knowledge than I can answer to back up or offer an alternative to what I stated. Sorry about the spelling.[/quote]

It looks to me more like an area of "new" growth surrounding and overgrowing "old" growth.
