Need Help! Bonsai trunk turning black

I put my bonsai outside this summer for the first time after repotting in early summer. We had alot of rain in August here in NJ. I thought maybe it was just getting moldy from all of the moisture, but after reading on this forum and looking closer I am concerned it may be scale. I have had scale on some other plants that were in the vicinity of this one before. It was easy to remove from those plants because they had smooth trunks and branches.

How do I treat this?

Your help is greatly appreciated! Ross

I'm not sure that I see what you're talking about. I see shadows and old cut wounds. Can you use Paint to circle the areas of interest and maybe get better close ups?

Ross - I don't know what you have there but it's not scale and it's not pretty.
I highly suggest that you get that tree out of your house (for now) and away from your other trees/plants. My only thought is some sort of 'sooty mold' or fungus. I have no other suggestions - hopefully someone will.

Many of us are having fungal problems due to this strangely wet warm season, mostly with Ponderosa and Japanese black pines. But they do not look like what you are experiencing. We're using various fungicides weekly in an attempt to keep the fungus at bay.

The webbiness looks like spider mites. I've never been that close to scale insects (great photo), but that could be them. It looks like sap is leaking from the tree actually. I would clear out the indoor grow area if you've any other plants there. Treat with a house and garden spray, and replace any UNinfected plants. Get the infected plant into a quarantine space and treat it directly. You've mulitple things going on, for sure, so use chemical. Oils and soaps are just too gentle for reall bad problems. Try not to get any of the spray in the soil though. A good way to do this is to bag or shrink wrap the pot, securing the soil. You then turn the tree upside down and spray the heck out of it. Good luck.
