Bonsai and rock problem? / new ideas

I bought a new bonsai yesterday (Fukien Tea). It came with a large rock that seems to be sunk in solid. I've read things before about rocks becoming a problem for Bonsai. Would anyone recommend removing this? As you see it doesn't seem to be causing a problem at the moment.

Also, my other bonsai seems to be dying unfortunately :cry:. (Also Fukien Tea)

I wondered if buying a UV bulb/flourescent tube would be a good idea for both my bonsai? Especially for these darker days.

Any ideas?

Many times mass produced bonsai come with a surface layer of smaller rocks that are glued together into one solid mass. This is done primarily as a shipping aid and it is these rocks that should always be removed. The large rock is not nearly as problematic as the peat heavy soil that tree appears to be in.

Yes by all means if you are willing to put out the cash it can only help your plants. It will also allow you to get them away from your cold window. As you have learned Fukiens don't like it too cool.

If aesthetics are not a consideration, a 4 foot fluorescent shop fixture and a cheap timer can be had for less than $30.00

I don't see a problem with that rock provided it is not interfering w/ watering.

Your soil does concern me a bit though, [Looks like alot of fine particles] You may want to check out the soil sticky:
