HELP! My bonsai is dying/dead

Over the past month we have had a million things happen and our time has been so short to do anything that our bonsai has been neglected. We are moving and in the midst of packing up it occurred to me that our bonsai has been looking bad for awhile. It's a Chinese Elm that we've enjoyed for the past 2 1/2 years and we're sad that we've let it get this way. We're hoping it's not dead and can still be saved, but it's looking grim.

It's been on a window sill for awhile and when I noticed how it was doing I took it outside, submerged it in water for thirty minutes and let it go. Today the leaves are darker brown than yesterday (they were withered green yesterday). I tried scraping a tiny piece of bark off to see if it was still green (yesterday) and there was still a little green, but not much.

It's hot here (austin, tx) so I put it in a place outside where it would only get 2ish hours of direct sunlight.

Any help/insight is appreciated!

I would say it was neglected for too long. RIP

Try again in your new location with something fresh.

Learn from the past.

Do better in the future.

Scratch the bark. It looks like an Elm, and they can bounce back from some awful situations IF provided with excellent conditions. If the bark is green underneath, you may still have a shot at saving it. It actually doesn't look dry/dead enough for me to write it off completely. Water when dry and, above all, if it is an Elm, do NOT bring it inside.

It definitely seems even more dead today. Thanks for all the insight. I'll be trying again with lots of changes this time around.
