What is the easiest bonsai species to take care of?

Juniper is often recommended for beginners but it must be kept outdoors. Ficus is the most likely indoor species. I am partial to Chinese elms which are unusual in that they are described as suitable indoors or out, although I have only kept them outside.

I've heard that there can be problems with Ficus roots choking itself with over growth in a short amount of time. Is that true?

I'd imagine its rare, and easily fixed.

And I don't think it can happen in a short amount of time.

I havent heard of this, but id imagine with root pruning once every year or two, it should be ok.

Ficus are great little trees, and are often grown by non bonsai experts. They rarely encounter problems. Just don't over water and don't keep it in a window sill. A well lit area is best.

It is best to keep all trees outside (ficus is a tropical tree and should not be kept outside in the fall or winter if you live in a temperate climate).

I would recommend finding a book on ficus trees if you can find one. Try your local library before rushing out and buying one. Its best to read as much information on bonsai in general before diving into this lifelong passion.
