moss on bonsai soil

I recently put moss on the soil of my bonsai, because I have heard nothing but good things about it, plus it adds to appearance. I was wonderting, since I usually water my bonsai from the top, can I still water it like this, or is soaking through the drainage holes on the bottom better? Will the moss retain too much moisture, and prevent the water from reaching the roots?

Joe,

The general rule is that moss should touch no more than three sides of the bonsai pot. This will ensure that water gets to the roots properly, and you can continue to monitor the soil. Rather than retaining too much moisture, moss has the tendency to suck moisture away from the tree, so you will need to watch it closely as it continues to establish its roots and may need to adjust your watering accordingly.
