repotting

my bonsai is 5 years old and I am going to repot it this fall. I notice there is a thick wire containing the bulb of the tree. Does this need to be cut so the juniper can grow freely when I repot???

jjgoffiney,

I'm not sure what you mean by bulb on a Juniper but Bonsai are often wired into their pots in order to keep them secure. If that's the case here you will need to cut the wire to remove it from the pot.

Is there a reason that you are planning to re-pot in the fall rather than wait until spring?

When my tree came out of dormancy there were a few brown spots on the outer branches and I had to trim a few of them. I wasn't sure if the tree would make it through this winter so I thought if I repotted it before, the tree would have a better chance. It's five years old and have only owned it for one.
