I Need Help With Root Over Rock

Hello Everyone,

Ok as some of you may have read I just got a new Juniper and I want this one to be my most SPECTACULAR tree meaning I want it to thrive with grace and beautie and with this said I want to learn how to take it from what it is now to somthing like root over rock. I've looked it up a million times but I still think I'm missing somthing so I wanted to come on here and get advice about it from the experts. So I have a few QUESTIONS about it first then any info anyone can give will be great......

QUESTIONS:

1) Whats the best time to do this
2) If its spring should I wait untill 2011 instead of next year
3) Is Quartz ok for me to use as my rock

I also had an idea about putting a tree over driftwood has this been done before and how would it be done because I found this BEAUTIFUL peice of driftwood that I've been wishing I could have my tree growing on or in, I think it would be rather breathtakeing.......

GardenerX,

I have a thread here that describes one way to do root over rock. Here is another example.

This is known in Japan as Tanuki, in the west we call it phoenix graft. Often Juniper whips are affixed to dead wood to simulate the look of a grand old juniper with natural jin and shari. Here is an example, in this case a different species is used.
