Exposed Air Roots

My ficus are new to me and I have a question. Should the exposed fine air roots be covered in moss to keep them moist? I want to encourage them to grow down into the soil.

Yes, and slowly remove the moss until they reach the ground. An alternative would be to keep the entire tree extremely humid, using a glass container or clear bag. You might also want to wrap the moss in aluminum foil to keep light out and moisture in.
