Watering Thrice

I have read and heard watering thrice is the correct way to do it, but is it really beneficial? If so how should I do it.

My teacher tells me to water twice. First time gets the soil ready, wait 15 minutes and water a second time and the water will penetrate into the roots.

Josh,

Three times is probably unnecessary, especially if you are using the modern, free draining, substrate that most everyone uses today. A compacted or slow draining medium is more difficult to wet and that is where the custom of multiple watering arose. In all honesty, I usually just hit everything really well directly from a garden hose. Sometimes I make two passes, sometimes just one thorough pass.
