Azalea - Potential Bonsai

Stopped by Home Depot to get some lumber and wandered through the garden center, just to see what they had left at this time of year. Everything was 50% off. Picked up this azalea for $3.60. I stuck it in the ground at home and can't wait till spring to start working on it.

My teacher, Todd Hansen at Sanctuary Bonsai in East Hartford, thinks it would make a nice Root Over Rock. Not sure if I want to go that route.

In 5-10 years, I'd hope it might look something like this:

Or this:

My first instinct was also root over rock, since its so easy to picture a rock nestled in that nice bunch of roots.
but then again the pictures you show are also pretty darn nice

just to throw it out there, what about cascade?

Yah, I think a cascade might help with the nebari being heavy to one side (at least from how it looks in the pictures). That, or maybe a windswept in the direction away from the heavy roots, making it look like the tree fought to stay upright.

Just my two cents. :)

It has great potential. Good luck with it and please keep us
posted on your progress with it in the spring.
