zelcova bonsai not doing so well

Hi, I have a Zelcova bonsai and it dropped it leaves a couple of months ago and since then it has gone very dry. There are loads of new shoots growing in the soil of the plant, and what looks like moss, but the actual tree is looking very unwell. Has it DIED???

reeree,

It is very possible that the tree is dead. A deciduous tree without leaves for several months at the height of summer is not a good sign. The shoots sound suspiciously like weeds to me, my Zelkovas have never 'suckered' as described so I doubt they are desirable.

Try pruning back a little at a time to see if you encounter green tissue. If you get so far as to near the primary branches, leave stubs, you never know what might happen. If you've gone that far and still no green try nicking the trunk and look again for living tissue. The lower you proceed with no sign of live tissue the surer you can be it is dead.
