problems with brownish moss

the moss under my bonsai is turning brown. I don't know if I'm underwatering it or overwatering it. The foliage on the bonsai looks fine to me and the woman I bought it from said it needs lots of sun so that's where it's at getting lots of sun. If you could tell me what you think it'd be appreciated... Also if anyone has any ideas on styling? Can I safely remove that branch on the right? It's the thickest branch after the trunk.

Take away the moss. Moss I have found does not survive well.

does anyone have advice about cutting that branch off?

I'm not sure what branches I would removed (if any). The tree, as it is, is very thin/leggy, so I'm not really sure removal is the answer right now. I think I'd encourage fuller growth for the next couple of years rather than hacking off branches.
