soil

I've always used normal potting soil for my bonsai adding sand or gravel to the bottom for drainage is this ok?

Not really. You can do it, but it doesn't help to miniturize the tree...

I was thinking of making my own soil thanks to your advice but does it matter what kind of sand or clay I use because I have some sand(I'm not sure what kind) and my backyard is full of clay. Thanks for the help.

Sharp pointed sand is best, but it's all good...

The same can not be said of clay...it clogs the bottom of the pot and causes things to sit wet. Follow those recipes I gave you...
