Looking to get a japanese maple
technically it's a bloodgood Japanese maple. Does anyone have any advice about pruning and root cutting so I can put it in a pot and transform it into bonsai form. I want to make it smaller, how much pruning is appropriate so I don't kill the thing?

Technically it's Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood', one of the larger maples. I started with a dwarf maple to cut the timeline, but you can certainly make a beautiful bonsai from Bloodgood. Perhaps submitting an image of the tree would be helpful to determine what you might or shouldn't do. Every tree is a seperate design unto itself...
