Hi Elias,
Look at the WWW link below to see where I finished up through keeping fish, I am sure you will enjoy bonsai I would suggest you start from scratch with two or three garden center shrubs if you only have one you could get itchy fingers and trim too much off through impatience but at least if you have more than one you have more to go at.
George.

Bonsai tools are really expensive, you can easily spend at least a hundred dollars on each tool. About 120 dollars for the concave pruner and so on. Wire is pretty cheap and the pots aren't so bad. Trees are dirt cheap, I just go out into the forests and dig them up. And nursary stock isn't expensive.
Be choosy about buying liquid fish and seaweed fertilizer, you may see a small botttle of either at a garden shop for 15 dollars or more but, you can buy a 4 liter (one gallon) bottle for 25 dollars (tops) at a nusary.

Like most things in life, it gives back what you put in. But the giving need not be painful and I advise against beginners going out and spending on a lot of tools. A good pair of ikebana shears, a good watering can (I like my Haws for the upturned rose), and a good soil sieve set for making my own mix, still the best tool I ever got for bonsai...
