Hazel Bonsai, starting from a young tree

Based on the ideas in a previous threads, I am able to source a young Hazel tree local to me. Once I have it home what is the next step? Do I cut it down straight away or let it grow for awhile?

And..is it better to ask these questions when I have pictures to post?

(sorry with all the questions)

The general idea is to only put a tree under stress one time per year, so a significant relocation, repotting, or defoliation would count as a stressor. some plants can handle more, but that's the general rule. It also depends on the size and maturity of the plant as well.

Ceretrea,

Unless you wish to have a very small size bonsai young plant material will almost certainly require several years of growing out before much in the way of training can be done. It is a misconception that bonsai must be kept small from the start. Many times much larger trees are reduced to make bonsai.
