I was just wondering about different ways to make home made tree fertilizer for my horse chestnut and came across something online which suggests using the water you have cooked vegetables in, which is full of nutrients. Has anyone ever tried this?

No I've never tried that. If you do make sure that you have not used and salt or fats in the cooking water.

I have made homemade fertilizer cakes from various 'off-the-shelf' products. The base was a dried manure fertilizer to which I added dried blood, bone meal, wood ashes, and fish emulsion. It was a pretty nasty process that took days to finish and when all was said and done I was not pleased with some of the unintended consequences of using it. Lately I have been using compost tea as part of my fertilization routine.

Thanks for the reply. No salts or fats were added to the vegetables so I am assuming it will be ok, any signs that my trees don't like it then I will stop.

Was your method effective? How often would you feed your trees?
