I feel stupid but I don't remember what type of tree it is. my mother is an interior landscaper but knows almost nothing about bonsai and is trying to help me out but I really need some good help.

It's a Ficus and it's dry. Clean off the last of the leaves and soak it in a basin for about an hour. Mist the trunk daily (or more), and water every third day. Get it away from the heat source or whatevetr is drying it out, and it needs indirect bright light. And water...

Awful bumpy trunk; ask Mom about scale...

thanks so much. I got the leaves off and have been watering it with filtered water and all seems a little better.

Oh yeah, I forget to ask folks that, but chlorinated water can be a killer. Filtered water is a must. I have always had well water until recently, but I installed filters and ALWAYS use them for plant watering...

I think the bark looks fine, if it is a 'Tigerbark' Ficus. Thats what I just bought and the bark looks the same.
