Aaron,

I have no JBP's and my P sylvestris are still very small so I am not speaking from direct experience. I don't really understand, when you say that you have removed candles, surely you mean you have pruned last years growth, correct?

De-candling is done later in the year and it is done in stages. Although it may seem counter intuitive, weaker candles are removed first thus allowing them a longer recovery period as the season progresses. Stronger candles are removed later which limits them and allows the weaker ones to catch up.

Brent has some articles on his article page but there are no pictures.

I know that there is some information on his blog as well but it is more difficult to locate and you will have to search the archives.

Also, if I might make a suggestion, the 'Pines' book in the bonsai masterclass series from Bonsai Today Magazine will really help you out.

Bonsai Today is now defunct and I don't know the status of Stone Lantern. I see that the books are discounted. I don't know what, if anything, that portends but if you want the book it might be best to act soon.

Nice tree by the way.

Just about everything I have read says candles over 1in are removed in early spring,I have done that and littler candles started to grow below where I cut.
Norm, you remember those beech trees I transplanted while in MI on vacation last year?I took 10,I wintered them in a greenhouse, all 10 have swelling buds,I think they're going to make it!

How have you overwintered this tree? Pines around here have not begun to open their buds yet. I'm surprised that you already have new growth this early.
