It appears to me to either be a Chinese Elm or a sweet plum (Sageretia theezans), but I'm leaning tward the Chinese Elm. Care is similar for both, whichever it is.

Not an elm. Most likely Sageretia theezans.

yps777,

I agree that it is not a Chinese Elm but I am not familiar enough with Sageretia to say. With two voices mentioning Sageretia I would go with that as a tentative ID.

Can you show us a picture of the trunk/bark? Doing so would give us another clue to the trees identity. Elm bark, is to say, less flake-ish than the bark of a sweet plum, which peels off after a time.

The top pictures look like Chinese Elm and the bottom pictures look like some sort of oak. But don't hold me to it.

Take Care

yps777,

To me it looks like the lower tree (the one we saw back in September?) is an Elm and I am still not certain of the new one. One thing that seems odd is that you say the Elm has larger leaves than the new tree. Chinese Elms usually have pretty small leaves. But, again, I cannot ID the newer tree so it is pretty hard for me to say which one should be larger or smaller.
I have 2 bonsai
I take it that the Pepper is no longer alive?

In case you did not ask earlier or no one mentioned it yet I have to say that the soil your trees are in is likely part of the problem you are having.

Have a look at this thread and make sure to follow the links.
