This is either a troll, or the problem is *much* deeper than what is listed ;-)

knarly-tree18,

Hello and welcome. Can you post a picture of the tree? Without an identification then offering advice is pretty tough, there is much variation in the requirements between species. In the meantime don't make any drastic changes. Only water when the soil begins to dry a bit. Don't keep it constantly soggy. We await a photograph.

Right he has small oval leaves that are smooth and end in a slightly pointy rounded end. He is very far out of the pot root wise is that normal?
Will post pic soon. :D

knarly-tree18,

Slow down a little bit I'm trying to help you. I posted a link earlier that gives two options for posting pictures. You must upload them to a third party site and then link to them here.

This is a long shot but have a look here.

knarly-tree18,

Slow down, please. Your tree is not going to die in the next ten minutes.

knarly-tree18,

I'm sorry to say that I don't recognize your tree, hopefully someone else will be able to. In the meantime take the time to read the sticky threads, they will begin to address your questions.

Here is one on general tips, it will teach you how to water:
https://www.helpfulgardener.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1479

Here is one that will help with your questions regarding bonsai soil:
https://www.helpfulgardener.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3422

Make sure to follow the links to the articles. Don't do anything drastic like put it outside. If you provide proper watering and adequate lighting you will already be ahead of the curve. Sorry I can't be more specific right now.

Most people come and go. They don't spend their entire evening at this site. You can't expect an immediate answer to every post you make, give it some time. Read the sticky threads.

Like any community we are varied. I know several young people (High School) who post here and we have retirees as well. Experience also varies form novices to the very experienced. How long have you been interested in bonsai?

I'm in high school and have known about bonsai for three years but only really wanted one about a year ago.
I know you don't know the species but who can I ask and even though you don't know the species will it flower.
Andwhen you prune it do you cut of all the leaves or what and when do you do it?

Also, do a images.google.com search for Chinese elm and Fukien tea See if either of those is close (also use term leaf with those other terms, fwiw). You probably will see what you are looking for... Once the ID is noted, then go read/memorize (pretty much literally!) www.evergreengardenworks.com/articles.htm Clear concise writings of things you must know and understand to be 'successful'. Other ways work, but not as well (proven time and again, trust us - please)

Looks to me like Sageretia theezans, from the "toothy" edges to the leaves.

Thanks for the help guys. Of the possibilities noted I feel that the last is the most likely, Sageretia theezans. This species is also known as Sweet Plum or Chinese Sweet plum. I have been stymied in attempts at identifying this species before, probably because I have never seen one in person.

knarly-tree18,

Here is a picture for you to compare your tree against.

Examine it carefully and see if you agree.

Here is a care sheet for this species.

I'm not sure that plant looks a bit rougher than mine. However mine has the jagged edge.
