Planting a tree over a rock?

I'm not quite sure how best to word this but I love trees that have this look:

Where the tree has grown over the rock. I felt that this may be a good solution for styling my bonsai, since my tree is a ginger root ficus with the big bulbus roots.

I'm looking at re-planting my tree right now anyways so this could be a possible time to do it. I was wondering if it was "too late" to introduce a rock. Or if it wasn't if it'd be a bad idea. And, if nothing else, how I would go about doing it.

It takes a few years to get decent results. Just so you know that up front Harry has been doing trees for awhile (2nd post), and he can make things look easy. Too easy at times
